history

The village of Czorsztyn at the foot of the Czorsztyn Castle , after which it received its German-derived name [Czornsteyn (1395), Schorstein (1777)], was founded in the 13th century. There are more place names of German origin in the area: on the Polish side the village of Grywałd ( Grünewald ). The Hungarian King Andreas II had brought the settlers across to the Hungarian countryside: Dursztyn ( Dürrenstein ), Frydman ( Friedmann ), Falsztyn ( Falkenstein ) emerged in today's Polish Spiš , and Veľká Lesná ( Reichenwald ) in today's Slovakia .

In 1246 the castle belonged to the knight Piotr Wydźga. In the 15th century the Starostei belonged to the knight Zawisza Czarny . The village was burned by the Hussites in 1433 . It became a base for the Kostka-Napierski peasant uprising (1651) and the Bar Confederation (1768–1782).

Between 1969 and 1996, a 56 m high dam and a hydroelectric power station on the Dunajec river were built a little south of the Niedzica castle . The Czorsztyn reservoir was created. The village of Czorsztyn disappeared under the surface of the water and a new settlement was built nearby.
