Humenné

The city is located on Laborec and, along with Michalovce, is a center of eastern Slovakia . There is a pedestrian zone in the city center that leads to the castle. A museum is located in the Renaissance- style Humenné Castle, which is surrounded by a park . There is also a small open-air museum with the wooden Greek Catholic church of Nová Sedlica. In addition to the renaissance castle, the former monastery - now a Roman Catholic church - built in the Gothic style - a landmark of the town of Humenné. There are two medieval castle ruins near the town: Jasenov Castle and Brekov Castle .

In Humenné, as in many eastern Slovak cities, members of several denominations live side by side. The churches of the various denominations, a Russian Orthodox church, three Roman Catholic churches, three Greek Catholic churches and a Calvinist church bear witness .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1317 as a homonna . The fortunes of the city were closely linked to the noble family of Drugeths (around 1320–1684). They were large landowners in what is now eastern Slovakia with more than 300 villages and made today's city with a castle - today Humenné Castle - their seat.

Since 1871 the place has been connected to the railway network, see the Michaľany – Medzilaborce mesto – Łupków railway line .

During the First World War , the city was briefly occupied by Russian troops during the Battle of the Carpathians (1914/1915) on November 23, 1914; but on March 9, 1915, these had to retreat over the main Carpathian ridge.

In 1960 the place Kudlovce (in the north) was incorporated, in 1971 the places Lackovce (in the east, independent again since August 1, 1999) and Kasenov (in the south, independent again since 1990).
