Ladislav Grosman (born February 4, 1921 in Humenné , † January 25, 1981 in Tel Aviv ) was a Slovak writer .

Life

Grosman was born in 1921 in the eastern Slovak city of Humenné to a Jewish family. He attended high school in Michalovce from 1931 to 1939 . During the Second World War he was interned in a labor camp in Banská Bystrica . His entire family died in the 1944 bombing of Ružomberok . During the Slovak National Uprising , Grosman went underground and made his way as a lumberjack, brickworker and earthworker.

After the end of the war, Grosman studied in Prague, first social sciences, then as a part-time education. He earned two academic degrees. He then worked as a manager in the book trade and as an editor. After that he turned to writing. He initially wrote in Slovak; from 1958 then mainly in the Czech language. Soon he showed friends his first manuscripts. Among his first works was the story The Trap , which tells the story of the Jewish old woman Rosalia Lautman and the poor Slovak carpenter Brtko during the Second World War. Grosman was only able to publish this tale, which shook the taboos of Slovak history, with difficulty. It finally appeared in April 1962 in the literary monthly Planten . The directors Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos then asked Grosman to rewrite the story into a script. On this basis, the feature film The Business on Hauptstraße was made in 1965 with Ida Kamińska and Jozef Kroner in the leading roles. The film has won several awards, including the Oscar for best foreign language film . As a novel, Der Laden auf dem Korso was published in Czech in several editions, as well as in several international translations.

After the Prague Spring , Grosman emigrated to Israel in 1968 , where he settled in Tel Aviv . As a lecturer and later as a professor, he taught Slavic literature and creative writing at Bar Ilan University until his death in 1981 .
