Ján Kadár

Ján Kadár (born April 1, 1918 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † June 1, 1979 in Los Angeles ) was a Slovak film director and screenwriter .

Life

Ján Kadár studied at the Charles University in Prague and the Slovak Film School in Bratislava until the beginning of World War II . He and his family were taken prisoner by the German occupation forces. His parents and sister died in Auschwitz , Ján Kadár survived in a labor camp. Immediately after the end of the war he returned to Bratislava and made a film documentary about the first months of peace. In the following years he worked as a screenwriter and assistant director. A long-term collaboration with Elmar Klos began in 1952 . We were jointly responsible for making numerous films that dealt with social issues and topics from recent history and that also received international attention. Kadár's film The Defendant won the main prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1964 . The on a story by Ladislav Grosman based film The Shop on Main Street won the 1966 Oscar for best foreign language film . It originated in the time of the Prague Spring , which offered cultural workers more freedom than socialist society usually offered. After the end of this phase with the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops , Kadár emigrated to the USA in 1969 . The films he made there, however, did not have the same significance as the previous ones.
