To the west are the hilly parts of the lowlands and to the east the Vihorlat rises . The center is eight kilometers from Humenné , 22 kilometers from Michalovce and 67 kilometers from Prešov .

history

The oldest archaeological finds date from the later Stone Age (around 3000 BC). After the end of the Great Migration , the Slavs settled, where several Slavic settlements emerged in the area since the 7th century. In the place of Brekov itself, a castle was built on the site of the later castle, which played an important role in the time of Great Moravia . After the fall of Great Moravia and the Hungarian conquest, the castle above the town was built in the 13th century. The place is mentioned in writing for the first time in a document in 1314. Since the 14th century, members of the Drugeth family were more important landowners in the village. The castle was devastated in the 17th century as a result of several uprisings by the Hungarian estates and has been in ruins ever since. The main sources of income for the population were agriculture, animal husbandry and viticulture.
