Nižná Jablonka (Russian Нижня Яблинка / Nischnja Jablinka , Hungarian Alsóalmád - until 1902 Alsójablonka ) is a municipality in the Okres Humenné in eastern Slovakia .
The municipality in the Labortzer Uplands ( Laborecká vrchovina ) is about halfway between the towns of Medzilaborce and Snina at the foot of the main Carpathian ridge, which forms the border between Slovakia and Poland here. The Vysoký grúň on the Polish border (904 m above sea level) is only a few kilometers from Nižná Jablonka. The municipality is located on the Udava River , which has its source in the Poloninen National Park (Národný park Poloniny) and flows into Laborec after about 38 kilometers in a south-westerly direction near Humenné .
The 40-kilometer main road from Medzilaborce to Snina leads through Nižná Jablonka, crossing several river valleys along the mountain foot.
Nižná Jablonka is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Zubeńsko (Poland) in the north, Wola Michowa (Poland) in the northeast, Osadné in the east, Hostovice in the southeast, Papín in the southwest and Zbojné in the west.
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1436.
The number of inhabitants decreased slowly in the years between 1991 (206 inhabitants) and 2007 (172 inhabitants). The population of Nižná Jablonka consists of 77% Slovaks , 21% of the residents are Russian . 54% of the population profess to the Greek Catholic Church , approx. 21% are Orthodox Christians, 13% are Roman Catholic and 9% are atheists.
