Mátészalka [ ˈmaːteːsɒlkɒ ] (German: Salka ) is a town in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County in eastern Hungary.

location

The second largest city in the county is 52 kilometers east of Nyíregyháza and 77 kilometers northeast of Debrecen . State road 471 ends here.

history

The city was first mentioned in 1216.

Attractions

  • Synagogue , built in 1857
  • Carriage Museum, almost opposite the synagogue, founded in 1975, shows a larger collection of carriages and horse-drawn sleighs, rural and bourgeois culture.

Personalities

The city's most famous “son” is film star Tony Curtis , who was born in New York himself , but whose parents come from Mátészalka. Curtis visited his parents' hometown regularly until his death.

Boxer Norbert Kalucza was born here in 1986. He represented his home country at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .
