The Volovské vrchy (literally "Volovecer Berge") are a part of the mountains in the east of the Slovak Ore Mountains and most of it. The maximum extent of the mountain is about 70 × 30 km. The highest point is called Zlatý stôl ( 1322 m nm ), the mountain is named after the Volovec mountain . The ridges are usually 800- 1100 m nm high.
The mountains are almost completely forested, spruce and fir forests are the most common, in the south there is also a beech and oak forest.
The mountains border on the Hornádska kotlina ( Hornád basin ) in the north, Čierna hora ("Black Mountain") in the northeast, Košická kotlina (Kosice basin) in the southeast, the Slovak Karst and Rožňavská kotlina (Rosenauer basin) in the south and the Spiš -Gemer Karst in the northeast. Some places on the edge of the mountain are Rožňava , Dobšiná , Markušovce , Krompachy , Košice and Medzev . In the mountains there are old mining towns such as Gelnica , Rudňany or Smolník and others where gold, silver, copper, mercury and iron ore were mined.
The Volovské vrchy are further divided into:

- Holička
Almost the entire mountain range is listed as a bird sanctuary .
