Rock path (kirkel)
The Felsenpfad circular hiking trail is an approx. 7 km long hiking trail near Kirkel in Saarland and is located in the Sankt Ingbert-Kirkeler forest area . The rocks on the rock path are used by climbers and mountaineers as a training facility.
Directions
The path leads through partially dense mixed deciduous forest , past imposing red sandstone formations . Some of the rocks impress with high smooth or jagged angles, wide crevices , narrow chimneys and yellow-reddish-brown colorations. The route can be classified as easy and runs almost exclusively on a narrow, sometimes rocky path. Light to medium level of fitness is required.
Sights on the route
The many impressive rock formations on the rock path include a. the "Bad luck rock" or the "Hollerkanzel". Legend has it that a hunter on horseback fell while hunting a deer on the “unlucky rock”. At the place of the "Hollerkanzel" there was once the Hollerburg , an early medieval "wood and earth system" that probably dates back to the 9th century.
Another part of the rock path that is worth seeing is the "Geological Educational Path" set up in 1983, designed with rocks from various geological formations in the Saarland. At the beginning of the nature trail, an overview map is set up that includes the Saarland, as well as adjacent parts geologically, and shows the locations of the stones.
Also on the hiking trail is the "Frauenbrunnen", which was already used as a place of worship by the Celts . The rock backdrop with the fountain was popularly considered the place of origin of the children; a child born. On the right of the fountain you can see a passage that is supposed to be the end of an underground escape tunnel from the Wörschweiler monastery or even to lead to a treasure.
