The first written mention was in 1274 as Ilsuazg . The old church was built in the 12th century and is now a listed building. The place was a popular hunting ground for King Matthias Corvinus .

Due to the sharp decline in population due to the plague epidemic of 1536 and the Turkish war campaigns, German settlers settled here in 1690. In 1723 the place came into the possession of Count Anton Grassalkowich . He settled Poles and then Slovaks. Serbs and Hungarians were also part of the population.

In the years from 1845 to 1848 Sándor Petőfi stayed in Isaszeg several times. Franz Joseph I often came here to hunt.

In the course of the Hungarian War of Independence , the Royal Hungarian Landwehr won the battle of Isaszeg   on April 6, 1849, over the imperial troops of Field Marshal Windisch-Graetz .

In 1905 the building of the current town hall was completed. The local history museum was opened in 1967. On July 1, 2008 the place received city rights.
