A wilderness area (originally Wildbann ) is a forest in the historical sense that primarily serves to keep game, especially roe deer and red deer . In common parlance is today with the wild and free nature equated.

In Westphalia a number of so-called wilderness stud farms existed well into the 20th century . They kept herds of horses in the wild, but at the same time had a breeding influence on the population of wild horses since early modern times. A remaining example of such a wild horse stud is the breeding of Dülmen wild horses in the wild horse track . The Wildbahn Senner Horses project has been running in the Senne since 1999 . Historically, for example, the Emscherbruch and the Davert were also used as a wilderness for the Emscherbrücher and the Davertnickel .
