The community is located in the Hornádska kotlina basin , surrounded by the Branisko Mountains in the west and the Leutschauer Mountains in the north. The Margecianka brook flows south through the town . The center of the village is located at an altitude of 460  m nm and is two kilometers from Spišské Podhradie and 16 kilometers from Levoča .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1264 as Kaldbach . As the name suggests, the place was mostly inhabited by German colonists . Thus the village belonged to the province of the Spiš Saxons and later to the union of the 24 Spiš cities, even if as part of the town of Kirchdrauf (today Spišské Podhradie).

When the town of Kirchdrauf was pledged to Poland in 1412, the village remained in Hungarian hands and came under the dominion of the nearby Spiš Castle and shares its masters with it, such as Zápolya in the 15th and 16th or Thurzo in the 16th century. From the 17th century until the end of serfdom in 1848, Kohlbach was closely associated with the Spiš Provost and the Diocese of Spiš.

The name, which sounds "too German", was changed to the Slovak Studenec (Slovak "studený" = cold) in 1948, just as it happened 40 years earlier with the Hungarian name Hidegpatak (= cold brook).
