Dúbrava (German Dubrawetz , Hungarian Szepestölgyes - until 1907 Dubrava ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 313 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Levoča , a circle of Prešovský kraj , as well as the traditional landscape Zips .

geography

The community is located in the Hornádska kotlina basin on the western slope of the Branisko Mountains . More than half of the municipal area extends in the wooded mountains. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 468  m nm and is 10.5 kilometers from Spišské Podhradie and 25 kilometers from Levoča .

Neighboring municipalities are Harakovce in the north, Široké in the northeast, Víťaz in the east, Vojkovce in the southeast, Slatvina in the south, Oľšavka in the southwest and Žehra in the west.

history

Dúbrava was first mentioned in writing as Dubra in 1293 and derives its name from the Slovak name for an oak grove. For centuries, the village was part of the dominion of the Spiš Castle . In 1605 there were five houses in Dúbrava, and at the end of the 18th century there was a glassworks in the village. In 1828 there were 56 houses and 422 inhabitants.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Dúbrava had 346 inhabitants, 341 of whom were Slovaks . Five residents gave no information about their ethnicity .

332 residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church. Four residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 10 residents was not determined.

Buildings

  • Roman Catholic St. John the Baptist Church from 1654; In 1838 the tower and the upper part fell victim to a fire, in 1926 the tower was rebuilt. The church got its current appearance in 1968.
