Poľanovce (German Polanowitz or Polanowetz , Hungarian Polyánfalu - until 1907 Polyanóc ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 164 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Levoča , a circle of Prešovský kraj , as well as the traditional landscape Zips .
geography
The community is located at the transition from the Hornádska kotlina basin to the Branisko Mountains to the east , below the pass of the same name . The Leutschauer Mountains rise to the northwest of the village . In the Branisko Mountains there is a karst cave called Diablova diera (literally "Devil's Hole"). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 570 m nm and is eight and a half kilometers from Spišské Podhradie and 23 kilometers from Levoča .
Neighboring municipalities are Vyšný Slavkov in the north, briefly Lipovce in the northeast, Šindliar in the east, Korytné in the south, Pongrácovce in the west and Bijacovce in the northwest.
history
Poľanovce was first mentioned in writing as Polank in 1270 , when a certain Fiók , son of Uros, received the village through an act of exchange between Stephen V and the tower of Spiš Castle . Other historical names are Babarete (1321), Polyank or Babarethy (1352), Polanka or Babarethe (1429), Polanowetz (1787) and Polanowce (1808). The village was owned by several lower aristocratic families, such as B. Jancsy and Almássy in the 18th century. In 1787 the village had 36 houses and 305 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 55 houses and 397 inhabitants who were employed as carters, charcoal burners and farmers.
Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 182 inhabitants in Poľanovce, including 176 Slovaks . Six residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity.
167 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Church AB and the Greek Catholic Church. Three residents had no denomination and six residents had no denomination.
