Bijacovce (Slovak in the 19th century "Biacovce"; German praying village or Biatzowitz , Hungarian Szepesmindszent - until 1907 Mindszent ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 958 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and belongs to Okres Levoča , a circle of Prešovský kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the north-eastern part of the Hornádska kotlina basin in the shadow of the Leutschauer Mountains to the north , in which part of the municipality is located. Branisko to the east is also clearly visible. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 562 m nm and is six kilometers from Spišské Podhradie and 20 kilometers from Levoča .
history
The place Bijacovce was founded in the late 12th century and first mentioned in writing in 1258, when it was assigned to the German "guests" who came after the Mongol invasion in 1241/42 . In the 15th century, however, the village came back to the estate of the nearby Spiš Castle and has since been owned by families such as Zápolya , Thurzo and Csáky. In 1828 there are 84 houses and 605 inhabitants in the village. In 1831 it was one of the centers of the so-called East Slovak Peasant Uprising .
