Company history
The company was established in 1887 as Skånska Cementgjuteriet ( Scanian Cement foundry) of Rudolf Fredrik Berg founded and began the manufacture of individual Baumittelprodukte. It quickly developed into a construction company and within ten years the company received its first international construction contract. The group played a significant role in the construction of Sweden's infrastructure, including roads, power plants, office buildings and houses.
The growth in Sweden was followed by international expansion. In the mid-1950s, the company made the big step into international markets. In the decades that followed, it penetrated the markets of South America, Africa and Asia, and in 1971 it entered the United States, where it is one of the largest in the construction sector. In 1984 the name Skanska , which was already in use before, became the company's official name.
In 1997 Skanska took over the Swedish company Göinge Mekaniska , a large manufacturer of steel structures.
