Nordea Bank Abp ( Nor dic I dea s) is a leading financial services group in Northern Europe and the Baltic States with activities within the following business areas: retail banking (private customers), Corporate Finance (companies and institutions), as well as asset management and life insurance . The largest shareholders are the Finnish financial company Sampo Group with 21.3 percent of the shares (as of August 2018).

history

The cornerstone of Nordea was laid in 1997 through the merger of the previously independent Finnish Merita Bank and the Swedish Nordbanken to form MeritaNordbanken . In March 2000 a merger with the Danish Unibank A / S and a little later with the Norwegian Christiania Bank to form Nordea was announced.

North banks

The Nordbanken was formed in 1986 through the merger of the Sundsvallsbanken and the Uplandsbanken . In 1990 Post-och Kreditbanken was acquired. The mostly state-owned company was the largest Swedish bank after the merger. During the Swedish banking crisis , the bank almost collapsed in autumn 1991. The bank could only be saved with an extensive injection of capital by the state. In the course of this crisis the Götabanken , which had to write off 37.3% of its loans, was nationalized and later merged with the Nordbanken.

business

The Nordea Group serves around 10 million private and 960,000 business customers. She also runs an internet bank that has more than 5.3 million online customers who collectively make more than 200 million payments a year.

Nordea currently has branches in the following countries: Denmark , Sweden , Norway , Finland , Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Luxembourg , Poland , Switzerland and Germany .

The Nordea share is on the stock exchanges of Copenhagen , Helsinki and Stockholm stock exchanges.

Nordea and offshore mailbox companies

The Panama Papers made it known in early 2016 that Nordea had several hundred offshore mailbox companies . The business with Mossack Fonseca should be settled and ended as soon as possible. An internal investigation was also announced.

According to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, UK-based investor Bill Browder has claimed to have evidence that $ 450 million in suspicious funds has flowed through Nordea accounts. Lt. SZ, Bowder already played an important role in the investigation against the Danish Danske Bank .
