history

The history of the Crédit Agricole goes back to the end of the 19th century , based on a law of 1884 that allowed for free professional association and the establishment of farmers' associations and local mutual banks. The Société de Crédit Agricole de l'arrondissement de Poligny in Salins-les-Bains in the Jura was founded on February 23, 1885. This institution was the first of its kind in France.

Inspired by this experience and to encourage lending to the benefit of small family businesses, the law of November 5, 1894, promoted by Agriculture Minister Jules Méline , allowed the establishment of local agricultural credit associations. The first coffers were formed by local elites made up of agronomists, professors and owners, while the farmers were still in the minority.

criticism

In September 2010, Crédit Agricole and ten other banks were fined 381 million euros by the Conseil de la Concurrence . The banks had made an agreement according to which they would charge their customers 4.3 cents check fees per check from January 2002 to July 2007 in order to generate extra profits. This affected 80% of the checks used in France. Check transactions in France were free until 2002. After the intervention of the banking regulator, which called the profits "illegal", this practice was stopped. The banks in this cartel were also fined for excessive fees totaling 3.8 million euros. According to the Conseil de la Concurrence, Crédit Agricole played a leading role in the cartel, which is why its penalty was 10% higher. It was increased by a further 20%, since Crédit Agricole had already been sentenced to a fine in 2000 for obstructing competition.

Crédit Agricole is known worldwide in particular for its work as a sponsor of the cycling team of the same name , which took part in the UCI ProTour , in particular the Tour de France , and which bore the bank's emblems. The racing cyclists Greg LeMond , Bobby Julich , Jens Voigt , Stuart O'Grady , Thor Hushovd , Christophe Moreau , Jaan Kirsipuu and Magnus Bäckstedt were part of the team.

CA has been involved financially in football since 1974 when the banking group initially promoted amateur clubs. Ten years later - and now for more than three decades - she became one of the main sponsors of the French football association FFF , has also supported the men's and women's national teams since 2000 , but also continues to promote amateur football.
