Ružinov (German Rosenheim ) is a district in the east of Bratislava and with around 70,000 inhabitants, the district with the second largest population.
Description and history
In the place of today's district there was originally a lot of pastures, pasture land, grasslands and forests, interrupted by islands and branches of the Danube .
Part of the area had belonged to what was then Pressburg since the 17th century, the former place Prievoz (upper bank) only came to the city in 1946. The name came up in the 20th century, it is derived from a former Danube island with the name Ružový ostrov (Rose Island).
Today's Ružinov is an important business and economic center with a high proportion of industry, the most important industrial facility is Slovnaft in the district of Vlčie hrdlo, as well as the food and construction industries. The city's largest (open-air) market, Miletičova , is also located here.
Despite its industrial character, Ružinov is seen as a relatively green part of Bratislava, because compared to other parts of the city there are a lot of rivers and lakes (for example the Rohlík Lake) with a total area of 616,000 m². In the heart of the district is the Štrkovecké jazero (gravel lake ), a sports center of the city.
