Map with all coordinates: The Bôrik Tunnel (Slovak Tunel Bôrik ) is an approximately 1 km long two-tube motorway tunnel in northern Slovakia near Svit , on the D1 motorway , Mengusovce - Jánovce section . It runs under the Bôrik massif ( 992 m nm ) in the Kozie chrbty mountains and is flanked to the west by the Mengusovce junction and to the east by the Batizovce bridge over the Poprad . The northern tube is 1,001 m long, the southern tube measures a total of 995 m and the gradient is 1% to the east.
Construction started in June 2006 and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NÖTM) was used. From the beginning two tubes were built. The first (southern) tunnel tube was ceremonially knocked through on December 11, 2007, the northern tunnel tube followed in February 2008. The technological equipment was installed within eight months. Together with the Mengusovce– Poprad , západ section, the tunnel was opened to traffic on December 5, 2009.
The two tunnel tubes are connected to one another by three connecting tunnels at a distance of 250 meters each, approximately in the middle of the tunnel there is a 51.2 m long emergency stopping bay in both directions. Concrete lanes were used for the 7 m wide lanes in each direction of travel. The maximum speed is 100 km / h.
In October 2014, the Bôrik tunnel became the first Slovak road tunnel through which dangerous goods transport can pass without restrictions. In order to make this possible and to be able to classify the tunnel in tunnel category A according to the ADR , the operator NDS as had to retrofit the technological equipment with special surveillance cameras above every lane at all portals. In the event of an accident, the emergency services are immediately informed by the video detection system so that they can intervene as quickly as possible.
