history
The place probably originated in the 14th century as a mining settlement of Neusohl, but is only mentioned in 1540. The namesake is probably derived from the founder of the Hermann settlement. At this time, a smelter of the Thurzo-Fuggerische Gesellschaft was built, which processed raw copper . This hut existed until the end of the 18th century. In 1828 the place had 24 houses and 175 inhabitants.
In 1826 a paper mill was built on the southern edge of the town. In 1883 the place Horný Harmanec was incorporated, which was inhabited by coal burners.
In 1957 the area around the paper mill was spun off into the new political municipality Harmanec and the existing municipality was named Dolný Harmanec.
