Constantin François Chasseboeuf Boisgirais, Comte de Volney (born February 3, 1757 in Craon , Anjou , † April 25, 1820 in Paris ) was a French traveler , orientalist and philosopher of history .

Life

The descendant of a rural aristocratic family studied medicine and philosophy in Paris. There he was also a guest in the salons of Baron Holbach and Madame Helvétius , where he became acquainted with the EnlightenmentVoltaire, Diderot, D'Alembert and Benjamin Franklin, with the latter he remained connected in writing. In 1782 he undertook a journey of several years to the Ottoman Empire, which took him to Syria, Palestine and Egypt. He published the results of his cultural and socio-political explorations after his return and written down in Craon in 1787 under the title Voyage en Égypte et en Syrie, pendant les années 1783, 1784 et 1785. In the French Revolution he was a member of the National Assembly. In 1803 he founded the Prix ​​Volney for Comparative Linguistics, which has since been awarded by the Institut de France on the proposal of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .
