Weitnau is a market in the Swabian district of Oberallgäu and the seat of the Weitnau administrative community .

Location, districts, parts of the community
Weitnau is located in the Allgäu region in the foothills of the Alps. The municipal area consists of the districts Weitnau, Rechtis, Waltrams and Wengen.

history
Until the church is planted
Weitnau was allegedly first mentioned in 726 as Witunavia . The first mention in 1250 as Witenowe is certain . Before it came to Bavaria, the Weitnau market belonged to the Austrian rule of Bregenz-Hohenegg . Weitnau had market rights and was the administrative seat of the Hohenegg estate as early as the 13th century . Since the peace treaties of Brno and Pressburg in 1805, the place has belonged to the then newly formed Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1818 the community was founded. Weitnau had a rail connection on the Isny-Kempten line for a long time. This route is closed today.
Incorporations
On July 26, 1863, the previously independent municipality of Waltrams was incorporated. The voluntary incorporation of part of the community of Rechtis (with Hellengerst) took place on January 1, 1963. On January 1, 1972, the community of Wengen came to Weitnau as part of the regional reform .
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 3941 to 5334 by 1393 inhabitants or by 35.4%.

On March 15, 2020, Florian Schmid (Free Community of Voters Wengen-Kleinweiler) was elected mayor of a competitor with 80.3% of the votes. He took office on May 1, 2020. His predecessor was Alexander Streicher ( independent ) from May 1, 2008 to April 30, 2020 .

- Carl-Hirnbein Adventure Trail
- Alttrauchburg castle ruins
- St. Pelagius Church, new building 1862–1872. It can be assumed that only the nave was renewed in the new building in 1862 and the choir, built between 1739–1740, was retained. Parts of the tower are from the 14th century. Uniformly neo-Gothic religious building with colorful painting and imaginative stencil painting. The figures on the high altar originate from the Multscherschule and were created around 1490. The church is a station on the Bavarian-Swabian Jakobusweg from Augsburg and Munich to Lake Constance.
- Gasthaus Adler in Weitnau. Formerly the office of the Hohenegg lordship. The building was rebuilt probably in 1753. The previous building was first mentioned around 1200. Today it houses a restaurant, the tourism office and the community library.
- Village fountain in Weitnau. Erected at the end of the land consolidation in Weitnau.
- Alpe Wenger Egg (1056 m), one kilometer southeast of the Black Ridge mountain in Württemberg . In summer there is an inn and cattle are kept there. In winter, the Leutkirch Alpine Club has its residence there.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2012 there were 18 employees in the field of agriculture and forestry, 335 in the manufacturing sector and 117 in the trade, hospitality and transport sectors at the place of work. In other economic sectors 220 people were employed at the place of work subject to social security contributions. There were a total of 1,894 employees at the place of residence subject to social security contributions. There was one in manufacturing and ten in construction. In 2010 there were also 102 agricultural holdings with an agricultural area totaling 2,687 ha.
tourism
As with many communities in the Allgäu, tourism is an important source of income in Weitnau . Weitnau is a popular holiday destination in summer and winter alike . There are extensive walking and hiking trails , cross-country trails , historical sights and lots of play opportunities for the children. Weitnau has been a recognized climatic health resort since December 13, 2005 . In addition, the Allgäu cycle path runs through the village.
If there is enough snow , the Argentallift for skiers and snowboarders is put into operation in winter . Due to its location right in the center of the village, this ski lift is very popular. This lift also has a large jump for snowboarders.
education
There are the following facilities:
- Three kindergartens with a total of 174 kindergarten places and 163 children (as of 2013)
- Two primary schools in which 16 teachers teach a total of 273 students (school year 2012/2013)
Personalities
- Carl Hirnbein (1807–1871), politician and agricultural reformer, lived in Weitnau and died there.
- Franz von Miller (1783–1842), economist, was born in Weitnau.
- Josef Widmann (1833–1899), civil engineer and pioneer of the Allgäu dairy industry, died in Weitnau.
- Chrysostomus Zodel (1920–1998), journalist and former editor-in-chief of the Schwäbische Zeitung , was born in Kleinweiler-Hofen.
