history
Until the church is planted
The name of the place is derived from the rock Nagelfluh . This rock is discolored reddish by iron oxide . This place was once called Rötenberg (from Roter Berg ).
Rettenberg was the seat of the Rettenberg rule . From the beginning of the 12th century until the death of Heinrich von Rettenberg around 1350, the lords of Rettenberg were one of the most influential families in the Oberallgäu. Their property there included large parts to the east of the Iller . Their ancestral home was Rettenberg Castle .
The name Rettenberg originally stood for two places about five kilometers away. To distinguish it, the name of today's place Rettenberg was added to that of the parish of Stephans-Rettenberg and the other village was called Rettenberg in front of the castle . From this the name Vorderburg developed in the 19th century , which has been the official name since 1905.
With the ruins of Finkelsburg Castle and a castle stable near Emmereis, there are other former castle complexes in the municipality.
Rettenberg belonged to the bishopric of Augsburg . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the secularization in 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In 1818 the community came into being.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1976, a small part of the dissolved municipality of Petersthal with then about 25 inhabitants was incorporated. Untermaiselstein, which received this name on February 26, 1927 (previously Maiselstein ), and Vorderburg were added on May 1, 1978.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018, the community grew from 3,181 to 4,437 by 1256 inhabitants or 39.5%.
