Joseph Anton Steiner (born March 3, 1728 in Rettenberg , † February 28, 1801 in Augsburg ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Life

After finishing secondary school, Steiner entered the Benedictine order in Ottobeuren . However, he left this as a novice to become a diocesan priest , and was accepted into the episcopal alumni in Dillingen . In 1751 he was ordained a priest, at the same time did his doctorate in theology and was repetent in the seminary in Pfaffenhausen , later deputy head. In 1757 he took over a pastor's office in Hasberg , in 1759 became a clergyman and in 1762 head of the seminary in Pfaffenhausen. In 1773 he went to Augsburg as consistorial councilor , two years later became a penitentiary and general visitator of the Augsburg diocese, and in 1781 a canon at the St. Moritz Church , which he remained until the end of his life.

Act

Steiner had attained a thorough and comprehensive education through his continued reading of the most excellent philosophical and theological works. Eager, but connected with calm prudence, he showed himself in the administration of his professional business. He urgently recommended that the clergy, who had been entrusted to his supervision, studied diligently, followed a strictly moral lifestyle and closely observed the synodal statutes. In his religious views he was tolerant of those who think differently, which he also proved especially in his office as a book censor. His Latin history of the Augsburg seminaries and public schools has not been printed.
