White (artist family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Weiß family produced artists over four generations and ran a regional art center in the Allgäu with a renowned workshop in their hometown in Rettenberg from the end of the Baroque era to the 19th century . Fourteen artistically active persons, eleven men and three women (including Maria Angelika Weiß, married von Gumppenberg (1799–1876), the first student of the newly founded Munich Art Academy), are now part of the Weiß family. The progenitor Franz Anton Weiß is considered the most important artist.

The Weiss artists furnished around 70 churches, chapels and numerous private houses in the cheerful Rococo style in the Allgäu. But their church furnishings can also be found supraregional in Upper Bavaria and Württemberg, in the Salzkammergut and in Tyrol and also in the northern Swiss canton of St. Gallen.

The work of the Weiß family includes frescoes, panel paintings, sculptures, but also decorative paintings. There are also landscapes and portraits as well as religious works, mostly for private devotion. In addition, hundreds of graphics, some loose, some bound in sketchbooks have been preserved. The sum of the remaining Weiss works is in the thousands.

The house where the Weiss artist family was born is located in the center of Rettenberg opposite the St. Stephan parish church at 5 Burgberger Straße.
