Johann Weiß (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Weiß (born January 4, 1738 in Rettenberg , † December 31, 1776 in Kaufbeuren ) was an Allgäu fresco painter who mainly worked in the Archdiocese of Salzburg .

Life

Johann Weiß comes from an artist family from Allgäu . He was often referred to as "Johann Weiß von Augsburg ", which suggests that he was trained there. In 1765/66 he lived in Vienna and in 1767 enrolled at the Vienna Academy . Weiss mainly created frescoes for churches in the Archdiocese of Salzburg. In 1765 he applied for the painting of the parish church of Böckstein , in his application letter he stated, among other things, that he had painted frescoes in the collegiate church of St. Peter in Salzburg. Their authorship is not entirely clear, however, some of the frescoes are attributed to Franz Xaver König . He is named as a painter in the archives of St. Peter, but may have passed the commission on to Weiß. The work of Johann Weiß stands at the transition from Baroque to Rococo and shows influences from both the Augsburg and the Vienna School, including Paul Troger and Franz Anton Maulbertsch .
