Böckstein is part of the municipality of Bad Gastein in the Gastein Valley ( Pongau , Salzburg , Austria ).

location

Tauern tunnel north portal , approx. 1911

The place is behind Bad Gastein, where the valley divides into the Naßfelder Tal towards Sportgastein and the Anlauftal , at the foot of the Radhausberg massif .

The Heilstollenstraße leads here into the Nassfeld Valley to the Gasteiner Heilstollen ; At the end of this a toll road begins to Naßfeld (Sportgastein). There are three waterfalls along the old path : the Schleierfall , the Kesselfall and the Bärenfall . Below the Kesselfall there is usually still snow over the creek in summer, because there in winter huge avalanches fall down the rocks and in summer the sun barely reaches this place.

The north portal of the two-track Tauern tunnel of the Tauern Railway, completed in 1909, is located in the Böcksteiner Anlauftal . This leads here through the main Alpine ridge (at this point the Hohe Tauern ) to Mallnitz in Carinthia .

History and sights

  • The old mining site is best known for the mining museum and the Radhausberg mine at 1900 m with the Hieronymus tunnel , which documents the history of gold mining . The Böcksteiner Montanforschungszentrum Radhausberg (MFZR) is also located here.
  • The Roman road over the Tauern ( Gasteiner Tauern , both about 2,450 meters above sea level) led through this valley in ancient times. An interdisciplinary research project proved the remains of Roman roads on the Korntauern / Hohen Tauern and Mallnitzer Tauern / Niederen Tauern as well as in the Bockharttal.
  • The Böcksteiner church Maria vom Gute Rat was built between 1764 and 1766 by the master builder Christian Glaner from Werfen according to plans by the lordly building manager Wolfgang Hagenauer . The client was Archbishop Sigismund von Schrattenbach . The ceiling painting of the church, consecrated in 1767, shows the origin of the miraculous image of Mary from Genazzano's advice and comes from Johann Weiß from Augsburg. In addition, there are mainly motifs from mining. The Böckstein church was also used by Jakob Alt (1789–1872) as a motif for a lithograph in 1830 and was depicted by the Biedermeier artist without the hunting lodge.
  • The Catholic rectory is located south of the church. Erected in 1742 as a mountain administrator's house. It is considered to be the oldest still existing building in the Böckstein district.

Name customer

The name of the cadastral community goes back to the old Slavic peƈ and means 'rock face' - the Gastein Valley was a northern bulge of the Slavic settlement area (see Welsche ). The place was mentioned in documents as early as 1427 as Peckstein . This name was formed from the area name In der Beck and the tautological, German addition -stein .
