The Gamskarlspitzengruppe is a mountain group of the Hohe Tauern in the Central Alps ( Central Eastern Alps ), on the border of the federal states of Salzburg and Carinthia , between Gasteinertal and Mölltal . The group is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park . From the north, the stock is also called the Radhausberg massif .

Location and landscape

Seen from the north, the Radhausberg massif is dominant at the head of the Gastein Valley, and from the south it is just as striking above the Mallnitz Valley . The foot is wooded, the alpine step as massive pyramids, with alpine lawn and crossed by Karen . The region shows only remnants of glaciation due to its relatively modest height below 3000 meters.

The Tauern tunnel crosses under the massif between the two valley towns of Böckstein and Mallnitz . The Sportgastein ski area is on the northwest flank .

Boundary and neighboring mountain groups

The group lies on the main Alpine ridge , where the historically significant pass crossings of the Hoher Tauern in the east (which gave the mountain group its name) and Mallnitzer Tauern (in the west) join the two neighboring groups .

According to the mountain group structure according to Trimmel , in which the group bears the name 2583 Gamskarlspitze , the group is defined as follows:

Mallnitz - Seebachtal (side valley of the Mallnitzbach ) - (southern) Tauernbach - Hoher Tauern (Korntauern) - (northern) Tauernbach - Anlauftal - Böckstein - Naßfelder Ache (name of the upper reaches of the Gasteiner Ache in the Naßfeldertal ) - Sportgastein - Weißenbach - Mallnitzer ( Niederer) Tauern - Mallnitzbach - Mallnitz

According to Trimmel and the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps (AVE), it is counted as part of the Ankogel group, divisions that separate them on the Hohe Tauern are counted as part of the Goldberg group .

On the map, with the valley towns of Mallnitz in the south, Böckstein in the north, and the passes in the east and west, there is a characteristically symmetrical, diamond-shaped border.

Outline, lakes and mountains

The group forms an east-west ridge line on the main Alpine ridge, in which Gamskarlspitze ( 2832  m above sea level ), Großer Woisken ( 2708  m above sea level ) and Romatespitze ( 2596  m above sea level ) lie.

To the northwest, a ridge stretches over the Mallnitzriegel ( 2611  m above sea level ), the Radhausberg massif , whose most important peaks are Kreuzeck ( 2686  m above sea level ), Salesenkogel ( 2680  m above sea level ) and the eponymous Radhausberg ( 2513  m above sea level ) o. A. ) are. The Weißenbach rises between the Radhausberg and the main Alpine ridge and flows over the Höllkarbach from the Gesselkogel into the Gasteiner Ache (Naßfelder Ache).

The Höhkar valley , in which the Lower Höhkarsee ( 1900  m above sea level ) and Upper Höhkarsee ( 2027  m above sea level ) lie in an alpine region, is drawn into the massif from the north - inaccessible through a steep step on the watercourse . The Roßkarkogel ( 2532  m above sea level ) lies between Höhkarseen and Anlauftal .

Below the Kreuzeck, in the Sportgastein ski area, is the Knappenbäudelsee , which also derives its name from mining history ( Knappengebäude ).

Geology and mining

Rock crevices in the pas adit

The mountain group, which consists of gneisses ( old crystalline , central gneiss ) and shows only a few traces of the slate of the Tauern window (at the foot in the south, and as Mallnitzer Mulde in the depths), is particularly known for its gold deposits. The mining was on and in the eponymous Radhausberg / Radhauskogel, below which the mining facilities - the Radhausberg mine (Hieronymushaus) at 1900 m and the Hieronymus tunnel - stood, up to the Salesenkogel with its main gorge leading to rich gold, and the mining area in the Nassfeldtal below the Kreuzkogel in Room of the Knappenbäudelsee. The Gastein healing cave also leads deep into the massif, which uses the relatively very high radon concentration of - in the cave - 44 kBq / m³ through short-term use as part of cures for healing purposes. Increased geological background radiation is typical for rocks such as gneiss and granite, such as those found in the Gastein Valley. The so-called radon heat therapy is used above all for inflammatory diseases of the rheumatic type .

Mountain tours
  • The most famous route in the area is the stage of the main Alpine ridge route Tauernhöhenweg from the Hannoverhaus over the Göttinger Weg to the Mindener Hut under the Gamskarlspitze, and on to the Hagener Hut .
  • It is also possible to cross it in north-south direction from the Heilstollen-Kurhaus over the Höhkarseen to the Gamskarlspitze (partly unmarked) to Mallnitz (glacier, remnants of the Woiskenkee ; descent directly into the Seebachtal, or via Mindener Hütte - Stockeralm).
  • A circumnavigation is largely accessible by hiking trails along the boundary given above.
