The Mallnitz valley lies at the transition from the Goldberg group to the Ankogel group . It is created in the village of Mallnitz through the union of the Mallnitz Tauern valley with the Seebach valley . At Stappitz, the flat trough valley narrows to a gorge that drops steeply in order to overcome the difference in altitude to the Möll. Here is also the municipal boundary between Mallnitz and Obervellach. The Dösental joins on the left between Stappitz and Lassach . At Obervellach, the Mallnitz valley opens into the Möll valley. Groppenstein Castle was built to reinforce this strategically important place .

At the time of the framing , the valley was part of an important long-distance trade route as access to the Gasteiner Tauern . An important alpine crossing runs through the valley with the Tauernbahn and its Tauern tunnel .

Important peaks that line the valley and its side valleys are the Hochalmspitze and the Ankogel . There is a ski area on the Ankogel . Refuge huts in the Mallnitz Valley and its side valleys are the Hannoverhaus , the Hagener Hütte , the Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus and the Mindener Hütte . There are two larger mountain lakes in the catchment area : the Stappitzer See in Seebachtal and Dösener See in Dösental.
