The Dösener See (also Dösnersee ) is an approximately 13 hectare lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Austrian state of Carinthia . It lies at an altitude of 2270  m above sea level. A. in the municipality of Mallnitz .

geography

The Dösener See marks the end of the approximately 7-kilometer-long Dösental that begins in Mallnitz . It is about 9 kilometers from the village. In the north, south and east it is surrounded by a mountain range with steep slopes. The highest peak of these is the Säuleck at 3,086  m above sea level. A.

The Dosenbach , the only inflow and outflow of the lake, rises about 1 km southeast of the lake. From the western tip of the lake it flows through the Dösental to Mallnitz, where it flows into the Mallnitzbach .

The lake has an elongated shape, the largest west-east extension is 700 m. At its widest point it is 220 m wide from north to south. Its area is around 13 hectares , making it the largest cirque lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

ecology

The lake has a surface temperature of only 7 ° C at the end of summer. The viewing depth is up to 12 m. Due to the climate and the height of the lake, it is ice-covered around three quarters of the year and only in summer without frozen sections.

Flora and fauna

So far, only char , which normally populate lakes up to 2600  m altitude in the Alps, have been caught in the lake . Plankton is only found in small amounts in the lake. The most common forms of zooplankton are rotifers , and phytoplankton mainly armored algae and green algae .

Surroundings

The Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus , built in 1910-11, is located directly on the west bank of the lake . It draws its water from the Dosen lake. The next settlement is the uninhabited Dösentalalm at 1953 m, the closest village is Mallnitz.

To the east of the lake is the active Dosen rock glacier . The temperature underground is below 0 ° C all year round. From the “Dösental” car park, the Dösental block glacier path leads across Lake Dösener to the block glacier. The University of Graz carried out seismic , electromagnetic and ground penetrating radar measurements on the rock glacier . The permafrost thickness is on average 30–40 m.
