The Falkertsee is a lake in the Gurktal Alps in Carinthia north of Patergassen . It is a surface-warm high mountain lake.

geography

The Falkertsee lies in the western Gurktal Alps and is likely to be of glacial origin. The geological subsoil consists of quartz phyllites from the Nock Mountains within the Gurktal Alps.

The lake is 1872 m above sea level. Its catchment area, including the lake, is 92 hectares. Its greatest length is 305 m, its greatest width 187 m. The greatest depth measures 13.2 m, the average depth is 5.5 m. The total area is around 43,180 m², 54 m² of which is accounted for by rocks and 43,126 m² by the lake area. The water volume is 238,131 m³. The shore length is 906 m.

Although the subsoil is very rugged, the shape of the lake's basin is quite simple. This is reflected in the low lake basin roughness of 3.7. The lake bed is very steep in the north-western part of the lake, the nine-meter depth line is only 16 m away from the shore.

Hydrology and ecology

The surface temperature can reach 13 ° C in summer. However, a clear thermocline is not formed.

The conductivity of the sea water is very low (54 to 59 mS / m). The pH value of the water was between 7.3 and 6.9 in August 1982, and between 8.2 and 8.3 during the mixing period in November. The highest measured carbonate hardness was 2.77 ° dH. Oxygen saturation fell in August from 98% at a depth of one meter to 71% at a depth of twelve meters. During the mixing, there was a supersaturation of 5 to 17%. The total phosphorus in the top eight meters was around 8 µg / l in summer and up to 57 µg / l above ground. During the mixing, the entire body of water had values of over 20 µg / l.

The phytoplankton mass in the Epilimnion (0 to 6 m) averaged 1095 g / m³ in August and 1508 g / m³ in November. The total algae biomass in the water column up to a depth of 13 m was 11.9 g under one square meter in summer and 22 g in November. This increase in November was due to the increase in Chlorophyceae , especially Planktosphaeria gelatinosa . In summer, diatoms dominated (52%), followed by Chrysophyceae , Cryptophyceae and Chlorophyceae (14 to 16%). In autumn the Chlorophyceae dominated with 51%, followed by Diatoms and Cryptophyceae.

The chemical parameters and the algae biomass, which is quite high for high mountain lakes, indicated that the lake was contaminated with nutrients from the catchment area. The lake was classified as mesotrophic in 1982 .

use

There are hotels, snack bars and weekend houses by the lake.

Animals in the Falkertsee

The following 5 fish species are found in the Falkertsee:

The stock of arctic char has been documented since the Middle Ages. In 1986/87 brook char and American arctic char were used, which are to be regarded as food competitors for the natural stocks. The previously high stocks of minnows have declined sharply in recent years.
