The Faaker See ( Slovenian : Baško jezero ) is a lake in Carinthia ( Austria ). With an area of 220 ha (with a maximum depth of 29.5 m) it is the fifth largest lake in Carinthia.
location
The Faaker See lies south of Villach and the Drau and in the north of the Mittagskogel in the Karawanken . Politically, the Faaker See belongs to the municipalities of Villach (with the villages of Drobollach am Faaker See and Egg am Faaker See in the north) and Finkenstein (with the village of Faak am See in the southwest).
The lake is divided into two basins by a threshold extending from west to east, which also rises as an island 12 m above the water surface. Its size is 2.2 km², its maximum depth it reaches in the northern basin with 29.5 m. Its mean depth is 16.1 m. Its volume is 35.24 million m³ and its theoretical water renewal time 7.8 months. The main tributary of the Faaker See is the Worounitza . Further tributaries are the Rotschitza and the Mühlbach as well as some springs in the lake. It is drained to the Gail over the Faaker Seebach . The Worounitza also gives the water its turquoise blue appearance. It feeds the finest lime particles into the lake, which remain in suspension for a long time and reflect the light turquoise blue before they are deposited on the bottom.
Ownership
Faaker See and Faaker See Island came into the possession of the Princes of Liechtenstein in 1831 . In 1918 Friedrich von und zu Liechtenstein sold both to Ludwig Wittgenstein, an uncle of the philosopher of the same name. Wittgenstein bequeathed it to his two adoptive daughters, the ancestors of the current owners, in 1924. Since then, the lake and island have been owned by the Catasta and Bucher families.
tourism
The places around the Faaker See mostly offer domiciles frequented by individual tourists and a varied tourist infrastructure with hotels, guest houses, guest houses, holiday apartments and campsites. There are numerous restaurants and inns, cafes, pubs and taverns . A number of events take place, the most frequented being the European Bike Week (formerly the Harley meeting ), which takes place in the first week of September.
