The Faaker-See-Insel is a continuously wooded inland lake island in the Carinthian Faaker See . It has an area of ​​8.04 hectares and belongs to the municipality of Finkenstein am Faaker See . The island rises a maximum of twelve meters above the water level of the lake and is the overwater part of a sandbank that divides the inland water into its two basins.

In 1970, the Faaker-See-Insel protected area was established - along with two other landscape protection areas in the immediate vicinity . It should serve to preserve the island for posterity.

history

The island had several, partly unknown owners. After Ludwig Wittgenstein's death, the owner from 1918 until his death, the inland lake island and the lake came into the possession of the Bucher and Catasta families.

Even before Wittgenstein was the owner of the island, a former farm had developed into a hotel with the name Wilhelm Schwelle in the early 20th century , in which you can stay in "well-equipped guest rooms", use the bathing establishment and sail boats provided could.

Over time, the hotel complex transformed into the 4-star Inselhotel Faakersee .
