history
The basin of the Vassacher See was created when a dead ice floe remained in this area when the glaciers retreated . It is surrounded by masses of sand and gravel from the Drava , which were deposited on the old crystalline of the Eastern Alps by erosion processes after glaciation.
Biotope
The lake is usually moderately eutrophic . However, since there is only a weak flow, it is sensitive to environmental pollution. The banks drop steeply and are mostly natural. A belt of reeds and large sedge has formed, which is joined by meadows of pipe grass , as well as black alder and pines . There is a coniferous forest on the east bank and a campsite on the west bank. Most of the water flows through the groundwater. The drainage occurs through a brook in the south, which flows into the Leonharder See after a short distance . The Vassacher See and its surroundings have been a landscape protection area with a size of 30 hectares since 1970.
On some days there are many torn creepers in the lake , which are annoying when swimming in the lake. Popularly they are incorrectly referred to as algae.
The fauna of the lake mainly includes carp and tench , which are also angled. The sun bass , probably introduced by aquarium owners, has multiplied strongly. Marsh crabs are also found in the lake .
Recreation
The Vassacher See is owned by the municipality of Villach and is open to the public free of charge. It is used as a swimming lake in summer and for ice skating in winter .
Water rescue
Since summer 2004 there has been a water rescue base of the Austrian Water Rescue (ÖWR) Villach at Vassacher See . The base was relocated directly to the bathing area in spring 2006 and was officially opened on July 14, 2006.
