The Egelsee (formerly also called Ecksee ) is a moor lake in Carinthia , Austria , and lies at 780  m above sea level. A. Height on the Millstätter See ridge . The small forest lake of Molzbichl and Rothenthurn can be reached from the south bank of the Millstätter See or via the hiking trails on the Millstätter See ridge. The protected water body does not owe its name to the non-existent leeches , but derives from the original name "Ecksee".

description

The moor lake with an area of 9.35 hectares is completely surrounded by swinging lawns swinging on the water . Due to its location in the middle of an extensive moor, its water color is deep brown. The moor acids lead to a low pH value . Botanical peculiarities are the papilla peat moss , the carnivorous round-leaved and long-leaved sundew and the water hose , the rust-leaved alpine rose , the Scheidige cotton grass , the rosemary heather (Andromeda polifolia) or the bogberry . All levels of moor formation can be observed at the Egelsee. A zoological peculiarity is the appearance of a plankton hippopotamus . Originally there were no fish in this lake. From spring to early summer a myriad of larvae of the common frog and the small pond frog can be found.

The Millstätter See ridge, a roughly 2 km wide and 13 km long barrier that was carved into gentle hills by the last Ice Age between the Millstätter See ( 588  m ) in the north and the Drautal (approx. 530  m ) in the south, is mostly one Landscape protection area located in the municipal area of Seeboden , Spittal an der Drau and Ferndorf . In contrast to the north shore, the south bank of Lake Millstatt is largely natural and almost unpopulated. The shortest route from Millstatt Abbey into the Drautal - the Millstätter See was crossed by boat - passed some distance east of the Egelsee. Remnants of the old stone slab path can still be found.

In sections, the ridge is like a plateau and has some depressions in which bogs and the Egelsee are located. The highest point, the Hochgosch ( 875  m ), is around 800 m from the Egelsee . Lookout points into the Drautal are the “Lug ins Land” and the Kreuzstein. The highest elevations in the west is the Wolfsberg ( 804  m ) and in the east the Geißriegel ( 988  m ). The drainage of the Millstätter See takes place via the Seebach into the Lieser . This cuts through the ridge of the lake from north to south in a gorge, the exit of which lies in the Drautal, the district town of Spittal. Some pegmatite lenses are embedded in the rock of the Millstätter See ridge . a. occur frequently at Wolfsberg, Hochgosch and Hahnenkofel. The mineral was mined as feldspar for the ceramic industry at the beginning of the Lieserschlucht and on the Wolfsberg until the recent past. There is a smaller occurrence near the Laggerhof. On the Drautaler side near Rothenthurn, Noric iron was also mined in antiquity, as evidenced by dilapidated tunnels and the discovery of a Celtic processing plant in Baldersdorf.

About one kilometer away from Egelsee on the hiking trail to the church “St. Wolfgang am Fratres “lies the Kreuzstein ( 830  m ). This "blood stone" is said to have been the blood court of the Millstatt Jesuits . Several carved dates (1653, 1660, 1766, 1792) with crosses and a trough for the head of the condemned suggest this assumption. However, the rule of Millstatt was already taken over by the state in 1773.
