The Carinthian Institute for Lake Research ( KIS ), based in Klagenfurt, is an Austrian association for applied research and public relations work in the field of water ecology . The focus is on the waters of Carinthia , especially the Carinthian lakes .

history

The association sees its work in the tradition of Ingo Findeegg , who made the Carinthian lakes his research topic from the 1930s. As a natural science curator at the State Museum of Carinthia , Findeegg initiated the establishment of a limnological laboratory in the 1970s , from which the Institute for Lake Research emerged in 1975, which was initially an institution of the Carinthian state government . In the same year the first Carinthian lake report was published. Over time, the KIS turned more and more clearly to ecological issues. Therefore, when the environmental protection department was established in the state government in 1985, it was incorporated. In 1997 the KIS was transferred to an association. The state of Carinthia and the Carinthian Natural Science Association were founding members . As an association, the KIS also stayed on the premises of the state. In 2005, Alplakes took part in an Interreg III B project for the first time .
