The Niedere Tauern (also Mallnitzer Tauern or Naßfelder Tauern ) is a high alpine mountain pass in the Hohe Tauern , which rises to 2,414 m above sea level. A. the guest One Naßfeld in Salzburg with the Mallnitzer Tauerntal (a Ursprungstal of Mallnitztales in) Carinthia connects. Together with the Korntauern it is summarized in the Gasteiner Tauern , which are often inseparable in the sources. Together they formed an important crossing of the Alps at least since Roman times , until their importance was lost in the 18th century with more advantageous alternative routes. Today a hiking trail leads over the pass and the Hagener Hütte , an alpine refuge, is located at the top of the pass . The designation Niederer Tauern is different from the higher Korntauern.
location
The Niedere Tauern lies a little west of today's railway Tauern tunnel and around seven kilometers west of the Korntauern. It separates the Goldberg group in the west from the Ankogel group in the east. The Hagener Hütte is located a little above the saddle of the pass at 2448 m .
history
Early history and antiquity
Both the Niedere Tauern and the Korntauern were used as early as prehistoric times. In Roman times there was a mobile feeder over the Mallnitzer Tauern to Bockhart and the Silberpfennig mines , which, however, represented a dead end for through traffic. However, the crossing over the Niedere Tauern lost more and more of its importance, but the better developed crossing over the Hohe Tauern retained it until modern times.
The pass in modern times
By the late Middle Ages at the latest , there was a lot of mule traffic across both passes. Even if the contemporary documents make different statements, it seems likely that at least one of the two passports was kept open in winter.
The Niedere Tauern was particularly important for the lead trade in the 16th century, here lead was transported from Slovenia and even Transylvania to Germany . In the 18th century, similar to the Korntauern, only the brandy fringing was worth mentioning, if at all.
