Life

Martin Ertle, who came from a simple farming family in Greggenhofen, today a suburb of Rettenberg in the Oberallgäu district , came to the Latin school in Rot an der Rot at the age of nine and made his vows in the Order of the Premonstratensians at the age of 16 . At the age of 21 he was ordained a priest. In 1669 he became cellar master in Haslach and two years later pastor in Haisterkirch . On his 31st birthday in 1672 he was appointed abbot in Rot an der Rot. His first major challenge was the reconstruction of the monastery complex, which was destroyed in a series of fires in April and May 1681, which lasted until 1689.

During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703 he had to make maintenance payments to French troops and their Bavarian allies who had set up their winter quarters in the monastery. The French withdrew only after the 1704 against the Grand Alliance lost the Second Battle of Blenheim and Blindheim from from Upper Swabia.

Abbot Martin Ertle gave the subjects large amounts of money and granted interest-free loans to alleviate the greatest misery. The popular and prudent abbot resigned from his office in 1711 after 39 years without claiming a pension. In his self-chosen solitude, he suffered a mild fever and died in 1712.
