Hair brushes are brushes made from suitable animal hair , for example from cow's ear hair . Marten hair brushes ( red sable brushes ) and badger hair brushes, which were used by the painter Jan Vermeer , for example, are particularly high quality .

Hair brushes are used in painting . They consist of animal hair, nickel ferrules and a short or long handle, which can be painted or unpainted. Hair brushes are available in various shapes such as flat (flat brush), round (round brush), fan-shaped (fan brush) and also as a special "cat's tongue shape" that tapers to a point (line puller).
