The Bavarian Brewers' Association is the umbrella organization for the brewing industry in the state of Bavaria and is based in Munich . The association , which has the legal form of a registered association , is one of five regional associations in the German Brewers Association (DBB).

purpose

At the launch of the Bavarian State Minister of Finance was Emil von Riedel on 30 September 1879 in the House of Representatives introduced bill to increase the Malzaufschlages (forerunner of the beer tax ) from four to six marks per hectolitre used malt for restoration of the Bavarian state budget. As a result of this increase, many of the then 8,100 breweries in the kingdom, which had been legally intended to repay and pay interest on national debts since 1806, felt threatened in their existence. In a rally of the Bavarian brewers in Munich under the chairmanship of Henry Theodore Böttinger ( Würzburger Hofbräu ) Georg Pschorr jun. (1830–1894; Pschorr Bräu ) founded a Bavarian brewing association on October 18, 1879 for the purpose of jointly representing the interests of the Bavarian brewing trade.

Another meeting took place in Munich on July 12, 1880. At the founding meeting on July 15, 1880, Johann Sedlmayr ( Spatenbräu ) was elected first chairman of the association. He remained in this office until 1900. The board of directors consisted of seven people. There was also a state committee with 30 people.

The association founded in 1880 is one of the oldest business associations in Bavaria. The purpose today is defined as "Perception and promotion of the common interests of the entire Bavarian brewing industry".

With regard to the Reinheitsgebot marketing campaign , the protection of the protected geographical indication “Bavarian beer” in Germany and abroad also counts .

Members

When it was founded, 462 breweries were signed in the charter, which together covered 75 percent of Bavarian beer output at the time - a total of 11.8 million hectoliters.

Breweries of all sizes from all regions of the state have joined the association to this day, which means that it represents around 90 percent of Bavarian beer output. In 2012 it was 80 percent of Bavarian beer output when the association had around 240 member organizations.

Administrative organization

The current association presidium was elected on May 12, 2016. The association's president is Georg Schneider VI., Managing partner of Weisses Bräuhaus G. Schneider & Sohn GmbH . Vice-presidents at his side are Karl-Heinz Pritzl ( Kauzen-Bräu ), Georg Reichert ( Count's Brewery Arco-Valley ), Bernhard Sailer ( Hofbräuhaus Traunstein ) and Andreas Steinfatt ( Hacker-Pschorr ) and treasurer Michael Möller from the State Hofbräuhaus in Munich .

The management is incumbent on Lothar Ebbertz, Walter König (Brewing Barley Association eV), Robert Scholz (Working Group of the Bavarian Food Industry - ABEW), Manfred Newrzella ( Association Munich Breweries eV , Festring Munich EV ) and Peter Zacharias.

Around 45 representatives of Bavarian brewing organizations belong to the advisory board .

In addition to district offices in the seven Bavarian administrative districts of Upper Bavaria , Lower Bavaria , Upper Palatinate , Upper Franconia , Middle Franconia , Lower Franconia and Swabia , the association has its own district offices in Munich, Kulmbach and Nuremberg .
