The German Brewers Association (DBB), based in Berlin, is an association of member associations and direct members of the brewing industry . Member associations are regional associations and professional associations of the brewing industry, direct members are companies and groups in the brewing industry that produce at least 3.5 million hectoliters of beer annually. Jörg Lehmann has been its President since June 2017. It was chosen on the occasion of the annual meeting of German brewers on June 29, 2017.

history

Efforts have been made since the 1850s, including through the publisher Johann Carl, to create a brewers' association. After long negotiations, the founding of the Brewers' Association was planned for July 28, 1870. The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War prevented this undertaking. After the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871, the founding assembly took place during the First German Brewers' Day in Dresden on July 27, 1871. Around 1000 brewers from all countries of the German Empire, Austria-Hungary , Russian Empire , Sweden , Belgium , Luxembourg , France , Switzerland and the USA took part in the meeting. The first president was Johann Stein. The Allgemeine Brauer- und Hopfen-Zeitung was chosen as the organ of publication . In 1934 the DBB was dissolved in favor of the newly created main association of the German brewing industry within the Nazi Reichsgruppe Industrie . It was re-established on April 1, 1949.

tasks

  • Promotion of the exchange of experience, particularly in the economic, legal, business and technical fields
  • Preservation and promotion of the good reputation of German beer and advocacy for the preservation of the purity law

The members of the DBB have been operating in a market that has been declining slightly for many years: while in the 1990s every German still drank an average of 140 liters of beer, in 2016 it was only 104 liters.

Others

Health conscious diet

The Berlin Regional Court has Brauer-Bund the Germans to suit consumer centers prohibited in a competitive process to advertise as part of business operations with positive health effects of alcoholic beverages. With reference to the corresponding representations on the website of the Brewers Association, the court has forbidden the Brewers Association, among other things, to emphasize the beauty-promoting effect of beer, to point out its preventive effects against heart disease, gallstones and urinary stones as well as osteoporosis and the reduction of dementia and To advertise diabetes risk through alcohol consumption. According to the regional court, the objected advertising is not compatible with the rules of a European regulation on nutrition and health claims for food. The German Brewers' Association has appealed against the judgment because, in its opinion, the references to the positive health effects of moderate beer consumption are not to be understood as advertising, but as pure information.

Not a world heritage site

Since December 2012, the German Brewers' Association has been campaigning for the Purity Law to be registered as a world cultural heritage . The application for this was submitted by the Bavarian Brewers Association to the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art, along with the relevant expert opinion. However, the application was rejected because the jury got the impression that beer production in Germany is now very industrial.
