Munich beer is since 1998 a protected geographical indication for beer that within the city limits of the city of Munich from the Munich club breweries merged Breweries Augustiner Brau , Spaten-Franziskaner-Brau , Hacker-Pschorr , Paulaner , Hofbräu and Löwenbräu brewed.

basis

Traditionally, Munich breweries are bound by the Munich Purity Law of 1487 , which in particular stipulates that no additives should be used. According to the self-portrayal, the Munich brewers have an inner attitude to hold on to high ethical values. In 1987, following the judgment of the European Court of Justice, it was possible to release beer for Germany, even “not brewing according to the purity law”. According to this, in 1998 the Munich breweries had the term “Munich beer” and its key data entered in Brussels as a “protected geographical indication” (PGI). “'Münchner Bier' is only allowed to be produced by Munich breweries and therefore Munich beer is also a registered trademark. [...] After completing their training, [the trainees from the Munich breweries] and those responsible for the breweries give an honorary commitment to the “Preu-Aid” to brew Munich beer only with water, malt, hops and yeast. According to an old recipe that has been handed down, a beer that enjoys an international reputation is still brewed today from pure natural raw materials - such as pure water from our own deep wells, the best malt and selected hops. "

Distinctions between terms

  • A distinction is made between the PGI designation Munich beer and beer production according to the "Munich brewing method". This describes the product obtained through process management and proportions of the basic materials, for example in contrast to the Pilsner brewing method.
