Meckatzer Löwenbräu is a brewery in Meckatz , a district of Heimenkirch in the Bavarian district of Lindau (Lake Constance) .
history
The roots of the company from Meckatz in Westallgäu go back to 1738. The brewery was originally only called Löwenbräu , but had to rename itself at the beginning of the 20th century because of the risk of confusion with the Munich brewery Löwenbräu . It has been owned by the Weiß family since 1853 in the fourth generation and is now run by Matthias Tomasetti and Michael Weiß. The latter was President of the Bavarian Brewers' Association until 2011 . In 2014 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his many years of service with the Bavarian Brewers' Association and for services to his homeland in the Allgäu and the common good .
In 1905, the trademark registration for the Meckatzer Weiss-Gold was applied for at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin. It was legally registered in 1908 as the first Allgäu beer brand. The brewery's output rose from 6,000 hl in 1900 to 14,000 hl in 1914. In the brewing year 1974/1975, over 100,000 hl of beer were produced for the first time; In 2014 it was 170,000 hl.
Slow Brewing Seal of Approval
In 2011, the slow brewing association was founded by 13 people, mainly from the scientific sector . It set itself the goal of increasing consumer awareness of beer quality, authentic beer brands and strengthening the public image of beer as a luxury item. The criteria for membership were worked out for over a year; The focus is on a catalog of requirements for the quality of the beers, which are checked in a monthly "beer carousel" at the Weihenstephan Research Center and which contain stricter rules than prescribed by the DLG analyzes. In addition to the requirements for the highest and long-term guaranteed quality of the products, it was important to the founders of the movement to set an example for entrepreneurship oriented towards sustainability. There is also a catalog of criteria for this, which a brewery must meet as part of the extensive test. In mid-2012, Meckatzer Löwenbräu was the first brewery to be awarded the seal of approval and thus accepted into the association. The association now has over 50 members, including 26 breweries.
