Gabriel Sedlmayr the Younger (born February 26, 1811 in Munich , † October 1, 1891 in Feldafing ) was a German brewer and Bavarian councilor of commerce .

Life

Gabriel Sedlmayr the Younger was a son of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder , who had acquired the Spaten brewery in 1807 . After completing high school, he completed an apprenticeship as a brewer and then went on a journey of several years to find out about European breweries. The knowledge he gained in this way revolutionized the German brewing industry and established the later world reputation of Munich beer.

In 1839 he and his brother Joseph took over his father's brewery. In 1842 Joseph left this business and Gabriel Sedlmayr became the sole owner. In 1866 he opened the Brasserie Bavaroise in Paris . In 1871 he had the first functioning cooling machine, developed by Carl von Linde , installed in the Spaten brewery . The attempt failed because of a leaky valve, but with that he finally turned Spatenbräu into a large brewery. In 1874 he retired into private life and handed over management of the brewery to his sons Johann (1846–1900), Carl (1847–1915) and Anton (1849–1920). In 1880 he became Kgl. Bay. Commerce Council . In 1881 he received the Golden Citizen Medal of the City of Munich . He was a citizen of Munich .

Gabriel Sedlmayr died in Feldafing on October 1, 1891. The grave of Sedlmayr d. J. is located in the Old Southern Cemetery in Munich (Gräberfeld 5, row 17, place 27/28 ). The tomb is a work by Gabriel von Seidl .

Gabriel Sedlmayr was interested in many things. He belonged to the Polytechnic Association in Bavaria, as well as the committee for the establishment of the railway line Rosenheim - Salzburg , the Bavarian Arts and Crafts Association and, since 1849, the Bavarian state parliament . He was a co-founder of the Bavarian Brewers' Association and the Kaufmann Casino in Munich.

Gabriel Sedlmayer was married to Anna Rosalia Schwangart. The marriage had ten children.

His older brother Joseph Sedlmayr (1808–1886) had paid out in 1845. In 1842 he had already acquired the Leistbräu and in 1861 the Franciscan brewery . In 1922 the Spatenbräu merged with the Franziskaner Leistbrauerei to form "Gabriel and Joseph Sedlmayr Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG". In 1997 the merger with "Löwenbräu AG" took place to form the Spaten-Löwenbräu Group. In 2003 the group was sold to "Interbrew Germany".
