The Free School Albris is a private substitute school in Kempten and Buchenberg in the Allgäu . Until 2009 it was called Freie Waldorfschule Kempten . The school calls itself: “The Freie Schule Albris e. V. Uniform elementary and high school for people in Rudolf Steiner's art of education ”. The school has been building a plot of land in Albris, a part of Buchenberg municipality, since 1999. Most of the school's move took place in 2015. In 2018, 321 students in 14 classes attended the school. It is possible to obtain a secondary school certificate , secondary school leaving certificate or high school diploma through an external examination . The Free School Albris also has several playrooms, crèches and a day-care center.

history

Founding and conflict with the Association of Independent Waldorf Schools

The school was founded in 1974 by Sigurd Böhm (born November 19, 1923 - February 8, 2013) as the Freie Waldorfschule Kempten . It was initially a member of the Association of Free Waldorf Schools , in 1987 a court settlement came about due to differences, through which the Free Waldorf School Kempten withdrew from the Association of Free Waldorf Schools. For the time being, she was allowed to keep the name Waldorf School. Until 1989 there was a second Waldorf school in Kempten as a competitor, which was recognized by the Association of Independent Waldorf Schools. But this had to close again due to a lack of students.

New school property in Albris

Property of the Albris Free School

In the late 1990s, the school bought 16 hectares of land in Albris. Individual small buildings have been built on this property since 1999. In 2007 a small lake was also created. Most of the school lessons now take place on the new school premises in Albris. The school grounds include a small forest, a stream, meadows, a herb garden, a wagon café and various workshops. For example the wood workshop, the stone workshop and the wood joining hall. The school's final move to the new building in Albris took place in 2015.

Scandal over violent teachers at the school

In 2005, two parental homes filed charges of assault against several teachers at the school. Eight teachers were charged. This led to several convictions, in some cases to four-digit fines and national media coverage in the years from 2006 to 2008. In 2007 the Bavarian Ministry of Education threatened to cancel or reduce the state subsidies. Among other things, the school was ordered by the ministry to deal with the incidents of violence internally. None of the teachers convicted at the time are active in school work anymore.

Name dispute with the Federation of Free Waldorf Schools and name change

In the scandals surrounding violent teachers at the Free Waldorf School in Kempten, the Association of Free Waldorf Schools saw a threat to the reputation of the “Waldorf” brand. This led to a protracted dispute between the school and the Association of Independent Waldorf Schools, which ended in October 2008 with an out-of-court settlement in which the school agreed to abandon the name "Waldorf School" by July 2009. Since then the school has been called “Die Freie Schule Albris e. V. Uniform elementary and high school for people in Rudolf Steiner's art of education ”.

Educational concept

The school's pedagogy refers to Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education . Students are in the same class from first to twelfth grade. The lessons are divided into epochs. English and French are taught from 1st grade onwards. In addition to the usual subjects, there is also the subject of eurythmy . Artistic subjects, handicraft lessons (e.g. wood, metal, stone processing) and above all school theater play an important role. There is no religious education. Instead of school books, there are so-called epoch books, which are designed by the students themselves. According to our own presentation, great importance is attached to the individual of each student.

Teacher

In 2019 there are 28 full-time teachers working at the school. Some of the new teachers are trained in the youth academy belonging to the school . In addition to orientation years, which can be completed alongside studies and training, there is also the option of free training as a teaching assistant in cooperation with the school. During the court hearings against teachers from the Albris Free School, it became known that at least one teacher at the school did not have a recognized education.

criticism

According to an article from 1986 from Die Zeit , Sigurd Böhm was already controversial in his own school because he had too much influence on the school. In an article in the Allgäuer Zeitung from August 2005, which deals with the allegations of violence, students are quoted who speak of “sect structures” and “psychological violence” in addition to physical violence, but other students disagree with the statements. According to a former employee who is quoted by the humanist press service , there is a strong hierarchy at the school, with Sigurd Böhm at the top. (Sigurd Böhm died in 2013). According to the press release, psychological tricks are being used to influence pupils, parents and teachers in their opinion and thus to encourage them to donate money again and again. The school contradicts this in a reply. Further points of criticism are the partially lacking training of teachers. Since the end of 2011, several critical articles by former students, parents and teachers have appeared on the Internet. The Freie Schule is therefore exposed to a vicious campaign.
