Wallers last walk is a German film of the Bavarian Radio freely based on motifs from the novel The route of Gerhard Köpf . With this work Christian Wagner made his directorial debut.
action
An old railway line in the Allgäu is to be shut down. But for the old track walker Waller, every morning still begins with a walk along the rails , which shows his work. On the last day of operation, the day before Wallers ( Rolf Illig ) retires , the path becomes a walk through time.
On his way to the end of the train he relived the stations of his life. Growing up in the 1920s, he said goodbye to his best friend Rasch, who died in World War II , a little later . After the war Waller meets his great love Angelika ( Crescentia Dünßer ), the daughter of an industrialist. When their daughter Rosina ( Sibylle Canonica ) is born, Angelika dies in childbed . This leads to a legal battle over the illegitimate daughter.
Waller, known as taciturn and solitary, does his job on the last day. He does not accept Rosina's offer to return to life. So Waller wanders beyond the current end point of the route, past demolished bridges on the embankment overgrown with tall grass into the fog.
background
The film was mainly shot on the Allgäu railway line Kempten – Isny , which had actually been shut down a few years earlier (in 1983 and 1984) ; shortly after the shooting, the tracks were dismantled. In addition, parts of the film were shot on the neighboring Herbertingen – Isny railway , on the neighboring Allgäu section of the Ausserfernbahn as well as on the Staudenbahn a little further away - some of the latter two railway lines are still in operation. At first, Waller drives to work in a DB class 627 railcar . Before the shooting, the two actors of the character Waller got to know the tasks of a real cross-country skier in order to play the main role authentically.
