Mahmud Jebril ( Arabic محمود جبريل, DMG Maḥmūd Ǧibrīl ; also Mahmoud G. ElWarfally ; * May 28, 1952 in Benghazi ; † April 5, 2020 in Cairo , Egypt ) was a Libyan politician . He was a founding member of the National Transitional Council and chaired its Executive Board from March to October 2011. After that he was the chairman of the Alliance of National Forces .

Life

Jibril studied in the United States . He was brought back to Libya on the initiative of Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi . Until the civil war in Libya in 2011 he headed the National Economic Development Fund . He tried to open up and liberalize the Libyan economy.

Shortly after the outbreak of the civil war, he joined the rebels. In the transition council he was only one of the two foreign ministers. At the end of March 2011 he was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board. At the beginning of August 2011 he presented a plan for the future of Libya after Muammar al-Gaddafi . After the murder of Abd al-Fattah Yunis , Jibril dismissed numerous members of the transition council. On September 29, 2011, Jibril declared that he would not assume any office in a future government after the “complete liberation” of Libya.

He died in April 2020 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
