Ahmed Miitig

Ahmed Omar Ahmed Miitig ( Arabic أحمد عمر أحمد معيتيق, DMG Aḥmad ʿUmar Aḥmad Muʿaitīq , * 1972 in Misrata ) is a Libyan businessman and politician who was Prime Minister of the country between May 25 and June 9, 2014 .

After the surprising resignation of the interim incumbent, Abdullah Thenni , the Sunni Muslim Ahmed Miitig was elected chairman of the Libyan government by the General National Congress with 121 out of 200 votes on May 4, 2014 , but there was confusion about the validity of the vote as it was not clear whether he is entitled to office at all. On May 29, the Libyan Justice Ministry ruled that Miitig was not the prime minister. The Supreme Court of Libya issued a verdict on the election of Miitig on June 5 and ruled on June 9 that his appointment was illegal, after which he resigned the same day and Abdullah Thenni took office again.

Ahmed Miitig is mainly supported by the Islamists . After his resignation, Miitig joined the militia alliance Fajr Libiya , which conquered the capital Tripoli in August 2014 and acts as a member of the New General National Congress . On October 9, after peace negotiations, he was nominated as deputy head of a new unity government.
