Mastitis Metritis Agalactia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mastitis-metritis-agalactia complex ( MMA ) is a for sows widespread, very common disease. This results in inflammation of the uterus ( metritis ), inflammation of the mammary glands and a lack of milk . MMA occurs shortly after farrowing and is mostly caused by coli bacteria or streptococci . The new name is postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS).

Symptoms

The sow has a milk deficiency about 24-48 hours after birth, accompanied by a fever of more than 39.5 ° C, a disturbed general condition and purulent vaginal discharge . In addition, the sow usually lies firmly on its prone position, as suckling the piglets is very painful for the animal. Not all symptoms have to appear at the same time.

prophylaxis

The amount of food should be reduced before the birth. In addition, laxative preparations, e.g. B. Glauber's salt are added. This is used to empty the intestines so that the coli bacteria that are in the intestine leave the body. In addition, it has been proven in practice to add acids to the feed, e.g. B. add propionic acid or apple cider acid. This is used to bring the pH in the urine to 7.5 and thus to fight streptococci.

treatment

MMA is a bacterial disease and can be treated with an appropriate antibiotic . An antibiogram should be made for this purpose . Often, however, gyrase inhibitors such as B. marbofloxacin or enrofloxacin, used to treat MMA.
